As a Census Collector, you will be part of the Stats NZ Census programme that helps build the future of our local communities.

The Census is the only survey in Aotearoa New Zealand that covers the whole population. It provides the most complete picture of life in our cities, towns, suburbs, and rural areas. The data collected helps the government plan services including hospitals, kōhanga reo, schools, roads, and public transport.

As a Census Collector, you will report to a Team Leader and work collaboratively with others in the local field operations team. You will be responsible for undertaking Census field work in your assigned area; interacting, engaging, and understanding people from a diverse range of cultures, age groups and socio-economic backgrounds.

Census Collectors

Mō te tūnga | The role

You will be reporting to a Team Leader and work collaboratively with others in the local field operations team – including Stats Regional, Area, and Community Engagement Managers. The work involves tasks such as checking and updating address information, delivering and collecting Census material and information to and from households and dwellings across your assigned local community and keeping records of your experiences in the field.

  • Interact and engage people from a diverse range of cultures, age groups and backgrounds
  • Flexible hours from 16 to 40+ hours across 7 days

Mōu | About you

We want to hear from you if:

  • You have great life skills and experience
  • You can communicate confidently and have excellent customer-service skills, including speaking with members of the public and sharing stories eg. of what census means to the local community
  • You can work your way around technology and systems i.e. email, text, mobile apps and have access to a reliable internet connection or an internet signal strong enough to download video content on a mobile device
  • You are compliance minded and conscious of data security and personal information
  • You have a good knowledge of your local community, and are community-focused and culturally aware
  • You are comfortable working independently and as part of a team
  • You have a level of physical fitness that allows you to walk for long periods of your workday while carrying bags with the required field resources
  • You are available to work in temporary roles commencing through January and February to March/ April 2023
  • You have the right to live and work in Aotearoa New Zealand and willingness to undergo relevant pre-employment checks

Also preferred, but not essential, is a current Driver Licence (restricted Licence at a minimum) and access to unrestricted use of a secure roadworthy vehicle with a minimum of third-party insurance that you are willing to use for work.
